Are We Ready for Alternative Fuels?

When we were in Key West several years ago we were really impressed with the electric cars that cruised around the 2 mile by 4 mile island. They were small and resembled a gulf cart in many ways. However, the vehicles had plenty of room for a family of 4 people including the bags from all the tourist shopping being done Duval Street. If you flew into Key West you could rent the electric vehicles at the airport according to one of the locals there. When we went back to our hotel room for the night we noticed several of the electric cars being charged up for the next day’s excursion. I remember thinking that for the size of the island an electric car would likely work pretty well there, and I thought about Mackinaw Island in Northern Michigan where electric cars might also be used. Are we ready for alternative fuels? If the electric cars catch on they would have to be charged overnight somewhere. Does this mean that the bills for hotel lodging would reflect the electrical expense of the charging? And, would the hotel pricing be across the board for everyone regardless of whether or not they had an electric car? I think electric street cars should return.
